A cord hung pendant light with a shade cut from travertine, a natural stone with an open, pitted grain that catches light instead of bouncing it back. A turned wood sphere sits between the cord and the stone, and a solid wood plate covers the ceiling point.
The reason to choose stone over metal or glass is what happens when it is lit. A frosted disc set into the underside spreads the light softly downward while the body of the shade glows warmly at its edges, so a counter or a table gets usable light without a bright spot in anyone's eyes.

Choosing a finish
The two finishes are the same light in every respect apart from the tone of the wood. Natural wood is pale and open grained, and it disappears against oak, ash and white ceilings. Walnut is darker and warmer, and it holds its own against deeper cabinets and timber ceilings.
Both carry the same travertine shade, so the choice is only about what the wood sits next to.
Setting the drop
The cord adjusts to any length up to 180 cm (70.9 in), which covers a standard ceiling and most raised ones. Over a kitchen island, a drop that leaves about 75 to 90 cm (29.5 to 35.4 in) between the counter and the base of the shade is the usual sweet spot: low enough to light the surface properly, high enough to see across the room.
Over a dining table you can go a little lower, since nobody is standing under it.

Care
Dust the stone with a dry, soft cloth. Travertine is porous, so keep solvents and abrasive cleaners away from it and lift any greasy marks with a barely damp cloth instead.
Because every shade is cut from natural stone, the veining and the depth of tone vary from one piece to another, and screen color and room daylight will read a little differently again.
