One thick wooden frame, mitered at the corners, with a large rectangular opening straight through the middle. There is no back panel and no cabinet: you see the wall through it, and the broad bottom board is the only shelf. It gives an entryway weight without closing it in.
A solid console can make a narrow hallway feel narrower still. Leaving the middle open keeps the wall visible behind it, while the bottom board still takes the baskets and boxes that a hallway actually needs.
