The alarm clock everyone pictures when they hear the word: two bells on top, a hammer between them, a domed lens over a cream dial and a carry hoop across the back. The case is metal in a warm copper electroplate, and it stands on two slim stainless feet.
It is 12.5 cm (4.9 in) tall to the top of the hoop, 8.5 cm (3.3 in) across the dial and 4.7 cm (1.9 in) deep, so it takes up about the footprint of a coffee cup on a bedside table. Around the back are four controls: time set, alarm set, the alarm on and off switch, and a button that lights the dial. Choose Roman or Arabic numerals; the Arabic dial carries a small painted floral spray at the four.

Wipe the copper case with a soft dry cloth. Fit one AA battery in the compartment on the back, and take it out if the clock is stored unused for a long stretch.

Two Bells and a Hammer
The bells are real metal domes with a hammer between them, so the alarm is a mechanical ring rather than a tinny speaker. The copper electroplate, the domed lens and the carry hoop are all doing the same job: making a small object look considered.

How do I read the time in the dark?
