This is a single panel of fine white tulle, a plain sheer voile curtain knitted from lightweight polyester and finished with a gathered heading tape along the top. It hangs straight from the rod to the floor with a soft vertical ripple.

The reason to hang it is the light. A true sheer at about 70 gsm turns hard sun into an even wash across the room, keeps the view outside as a soft green blur, and screens the room from the street through the day without making it dark.

Choosing your size

Both sizes measure 160 cm (63 in) across. The difference is the drop. The 250 by 160 cm (98.4 by 63 in) panel suits a standard window where the rod sits above the frame, and the 300 by 160 cm (118.1 by 63 in) panel suits a tall window or a glazed door where the rod is closer to the ceiling.

Measure from the top of the rod down to the floor, then pick the drop just above that figure. A little extra length lets the panel skim the floor rather than stop short of it.

How many panels your window needs

One order is one panel, so you buy exactly as many as the opening calls for. A narrow window, a doorway or a photography backdrop takes one panel. A wider window or a pair of glazed doors takes two, one drawing to each side, which is how the fabric gathers into its fullest ripple. For a gathered look on a single rod, allow roughly one and a half to two times the width of the window in fabric.

Light and privacy

This is a true sheer. Daylight passes straight through, so the room stays bright and the sun lands as a soft patch rather than a hard shaft. Anything outside reads as a blurred shape rather than a clear outline, which gives you comfortable screening through the day while you keep the view and the brightness.

After dark, when lamps are on inside, a sheer reads differently. Layer the panel behind a heavier curtain or a blind if you want full cover at night, and use the sheer on its own through the day.

Where it works

Living room and bedroom windows, either on its own or layered under a heavier curtain. Bathrooms and landings, where you want light and screening at once. Glazed doors and patio doors, where the full drop shows best. Doorways, as a soft divider between two rooms. And because the white is even and the weave is fine, it makes a clean backdrop for photographs, events and video.

Hanging it

The plain gathered tape along the top slides onto a slim rod, or takes hooks if you are hanging from a track. The panel is light, so a tension rod inside the recess is enough for a bathroom or a doorway. Hang the rod a little above the window frame and let the fabric fall to the floor; the extra height makes the window read taller.

Washing and care

Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle, ideally in a mesh bag so the fine knit is not caught. Do not bleach. Skip the tumble dryer and hang the panel damp straight back on the rod instead, because the weight of the wet fabric pulls the creases out as it dries and it settles smooth on its own. If it needs pressing, use a cool iron only.
